Randolph Stone, DO, DC, ND (1890-1981) was born in Austria and emigrated to the US at the age of 13. His name at birth was Rudolf Bautsch; he became Randolph Stone in the 1920s, using the name of his wife as his new surname. As a young man he studied to be a Lutheran minister before deciding on a health care career. He maintained a general family practice in Chicago for over 50 years and held eight different professional certifications. He was fascinated by the effectiveness of health ideas from cultures such as India and China, and created Polarity Therapy as a synthesis of his findings. Read Dr. Stone’s full chronology here.
Stone was very effective as a doctor, but struggled to convey his ideas to his medical colleagues. He was far ahead of his time in his exploration of energy concepts in health care. After decades of minimal attendance at his classes, he found a new audience in the counter-culture of the late 1960s at Esalen Institute in California. He retired in 1974 and moved to India where he continued his practice and study at a spiritual ashram until his death in 1981, at the age of 91.
CSES students and graduates have created an indexed, searchable internet version of Dr. Stone’s writing, available at digitaldrstone.org.
